Katherine Bernhardt at Canada
I never thought I would recommend a Katherine Bernhardt show. I have always liked her painting style, but never thought her washy sketches of Swatch watches and pieces of fruit amounted to much. Her show “Done with Xanax,” at Canada, is different: large paintings of E.T., with indicia of various scenes from the movie: the closet, in drag (one assumes), sick in the bicycle basket, etc. They are funny, moving, and strange enough to fascinate, and the combination of abstraction and film offers a clever commentary on culture, nostalgia, and consumerism.
Another good show is Susan Rothenberg at Sperone Westwater, where you will see she has painted a dancing rodent with such pathos it will remind you of Robert Walser dead in the snow. And don’t miss the charming Nicholas Party show at FLAG, or the Charles Ray at Hill Art Foundation, both in Chelsea, and both ending mid-month.
Things to look forward to: the Mathias Poledna show at Buchholz, and Peter Saul at New Museum.

Wheeldon’s “Dance à grande vitesse”
_
A good month for dance, with the New York City Ballet season in full swing. Don’t miss the new Ratmansky, set to Peter Ablinger’s fascinating “Voices,” and Wheeldon’s “DGV: Dance à grande vitesse,” set to Michael Nyman’s “MGV,” or musique à grand vitesse (“music at high speed,” commissioned by the Festival de Lille for the inauguration of the TGV North-European Paris-Lille line).
Also, Adam Linder will stage his work “Shelf Life” daily at MoMA throughout February. “Shelf Life” was commissioned for MoMA’s Marie-Josee and Henry Kravis Studio, and “features six dancers interpreting three concepts: the barre where movement may begin; the blood flow that propels physicality; and the brain that will reflect on dance.” Performers are Leah Katz, Justin Kennedy, Mickey Mahar, Angie Pittman, Brooke Stamp, and Sandy Williams. Three daily performances, 11:30 a.m., 1:30 p.m., 3:30 p.m. Free with museum admission. Check the schedule here.
